ESU Writer-in-Residence, 2025
Ruth Moriarty was selected as the ESU Writer-in-Residence for 2025. While at ESU House in October and November 2025 Ruth completed substantial work towards the compilation of a unique anthology of Australian literature that will demonstrate an unbroken tradition of celebration of the values and character of the Australian people, our history and culture, from British settlement until the first years of the 21st century. Ruth's written contribution will include an introduction and extensive contextual material with the aim of transmitting to a younger generation the substantial achievements of Australian writers, particularly as they relate to significant historical milestones in our nation's history.
During her time at ESU House Ruth wrote:
As I enter the third week of my month-long residency with The English-Speaking Union (Victoria Branch), my attention has turned from orientation and foundational research to deep engagement with the emerging selection of Australian verse that forms the core of my anthology project. Access to the ESU Library's resources, alongside Melbourne's rich historical milieu, has been of great benefit and inspiration. The residency thus far has provided an invaluable period of focus and reflection for progressing this project. I remain sincerely grateful for the support that has made such concentrated work possible and look forward to sharing updates as the project progresses.
