Congratulations to Dr Mark Schier

The ESU warmly congratulates Dr Mark Schier, winner of a half-scholarship in the 2023 round of the Oldham Wedlick Scholarship for further study and appreciation of the English language.

The Scholarship will enable Dr Schier ‘to research and document the changes in the usage of the English language as reflected in contemporary versus traditional versions of hymnals and songs of faith’.

Mark was previously a life sciences academic specialising in perception and psychophysics. This project takes him in a very different direction, matching his research skills with a lifelong love of the English language and music to investigate and document changes in hymn lyrics.
